With arts engagement at an all time low in 2021, and the nation struggling to regain it's footing after the knock back of yet more wide spread lockdowns, Naked Frank Theatre set out to provide a fully immersive and transcendent theatrical experience, that could be enjoyed without compromise, from the comfort of your own home.
"As it stands, the only safe way to enjoy live performance is at a social distance, in the great outdoors. Heavy emphasis has been placed on testing the possibilities of using digital media to make live theatre accessible and enjoyable for unconventional audiences, who have no means of going outside. Accessibility is our key focus. If participants can’t come outside to open water, we’ll bring the water indoors!" Out Beyond Her Shore was a virtual reality experience, filmed aboard LV21 (40 metre steel-hulled lightship, moored in Gravesend) and captured for 3D playback with a 180 view. Encompassing the themes of mental health, male suicide, and masculine oppression; the experience allowed audiences to step into the story through the eyes of the protagonist, Dylan. With no area of the ship off limits, audiences had the opportunity to directly follow the action, wandering and exploring the magnificent steel structure of the vessel, through the eyes of the characters. |

'Captain's Log. 1300 hours. Speed: 0 knots. For the last two days this ship has sat stagnant, lolling in the current as though she has no purpose whatsoever. Then, last night, an astonishing enlightenment occurred. I found myself bewildered by a sound undeniably god-like... It's been eight weeks since his sister's death and finally, now, it's the morning of the funeral. "Babe, the car's gonna be about twenty minutes!" But a true Captain cannot stay landlocked for long and Dylan's wife is almost inaudible above the deafening melody of the siren, calling this seafarer from the shore. Now it's a race to find the Goddess - Cordelia be her name - before this ship is lost to the waves altogether!'
"We want to create an experience that is transcendent and fully immersive, allowing audiences to cultivate subjective opinions within a relatable and sensory format. Providing palpable stimulation to vulnerable and under-represented individuals remains at the forefront of this project." The VR experience was on tour between September and October 2021 to a selection of exclusive Oxleas facilities. From November, Naked Frank Theatre opened the experience to the general public, expanding their reach across the South East. |
